Nicklas renews at Thunder

24th October 2017

Newcastle Thunder’s 2018 squad continues to form as the club confirm half back Danny Nicklas will remain at Kingston Park Stadium for the new campaign.

Nicklas made the switch to Tyneside from York City Knights for 2017 and made 16 appearances for Thunder across the season.

Earning two man of the match awards and scoring six tries across the year, he operated primarily at scrum half and brought a wealth of experience into Thunder’s ranks, having played in all three of the game’s professional tiers, including 11 in Super League with Hull FC.

Having proven to be a valuable asset to the team during an up and down 2017, both player and head coach Jason Payne are looking forward to an even better 2018.

Payne said: “It’s great news that Danny will be staying with us for at least another year. He is everything you want from a halfback, a good organiser, a strong leader and loves defending.

There is more to come from him and I’m certain he’ll have a fantastic year in 2018. He is hungry for a big season and I’m sure that will come out in his performances.

Nicklas said: I’m delighted to have signed for another year at Thunder and I’m excited to kick on from a positive back end to 2017.

From a personal perspective it was a bit of an up and down season with changes in position and a knee injury later on, but I’m really looking forward to a full pre-season under Payney and Heapy, who have brought a good hard working environment since taking over. I’m really looking forward to working with them in what will hopefully be a strong season for the club
