Toronto Wolfpack 50 - 0 Newcastle Thunder

20th August 2017

Newcastle Thunder endured a difficult afternoon at the Lamport Stadium in Toronto, as they fell to a 50-0 loss against the Toronto Wolfpack.

Up against the full time Canadian side for the second time in 2017, the Tynesider’s made a strong impression in a first half, as they restricted their vaunted hosts to a solitary score through Liam Kay in the opening half hour.

In a repeat of the tenacity shown back at Kingston Park Stadium back in May, Jason Payne’s side posed questions to the home side’s defence and went close to responding shortly after going behind, but were unable to keep control of the ball in the shadow of the Wolfpack line.

With the scoreboard remaining untroubled following the Wolfpack’s early score, it was they who made it tick over in the closing stages as a second and third try from Kay, were supplemented by a brace from Rhys Jacks.

With two further conversions from Craig Hall, the Wolfpack took a 22-0 lead into half time.

As in the first half, Thunder showed real resolve against the North American behemoth and held firm in defence for the opening quarter of the second forty.

However, when Toronto made their breakthrough on the hour, it opened the path to a further four tries and three goals.

Thunder return to home comforts for their next Kingstone Press League 1 Super 8s fixture, when they host Keighley Cougars at Kingston Park Stadium on Sunday September 3 with kick off at 3pm.
