Students from Newcastle Thunder’s College course ran in partnership with TyneMet College will progress onto university studies this September, after successful completing their programme at Kingston Park Stadium.

Aimed at 16-19 year olds with a passion for rugby league and the desire to work in the sports industry, the course has built on the success of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Excellence (Rugby League).

It provides an excellent platform for progression within the industry – the chance to work and train alongside rugby professionals in first class facilities is a unique experience.

Bevan Leeke, who switched to the course after finding his original further education choices not what he was looking for, has thrived in the environment as he graduates with the highest possible grades on the course.

Speaking to, Leeke said: “I originally studying at another college which I didn’t find as engaging, I’ve come along to Tyne Met and studied alongside the rugby course and I’ve found it spot on, I’ve managed to achieve all my work within the time limit, you get the guidance that you need and it’s just spot on.

“I’ve achieved three D*s which are the best grades you can get on the course mean I can go to University at Newcastle to study Sport & Exercise science, having surpassed the target grades I needed for that.

“I’m looking to become a sports rehab specialist or move onto the sports analytics side and if I can do an extra year, I can study physiotherapy as well.

“The two years have been a perfect combination of the academic and the rugby. I haven’t felt that the rugby has conflicted with the studies and the same the other way around. Everything has been spot on and worked well.”

This news comes after the announcement that nine of Bevan’s classmates will be progressing onto Northumbria Uni to study a wide range of degrees including Sports Science, Sports  Physiotherapy,  Applied Sciences, Engineering, Sports Business Management and International Business Management.
