McAvoy agrees new two year deal

28th July 2017

Recruitment for the 2018 rugby league season is continuing at Newcastle Thunder, with the club confirming the retention of prop Liam McAvoy on a new two year deal.

It is a significant statement of intent from the club in the Cumbrian’s re-signing, with McAvoy putting pen to paper on the first multi-year contract in the club’s recent history.

Joining from Workington at the start of 2017, the 23-year-old has been a stand out player with his impressive tackle rate seeing him regularly topping 50 per game and high energy levels allowing him to enjoy a high amount of game minutes.

The wealth of experience he has acquired over the course of a career that has seen him make almost 100 appearances in the championship and be part of the youth set ups at Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos has proven invaluable to the team and will continue to be an asset as Thunder look to progress in coming seasons.

Speaking immediately after signing his new contract, McAvoy said: “I’m really happy to sign and more than happy to make it a two year deal because I can see where the club wants to go. Ever since Payney has taken it on, we’ve gone from strength to strength, so I’m really happy.

“If we build on this year into next, I think it’s more than possible that we can get promoted next year, it could happen this year, but if it doesn’t then it will be a real target for next.”

Thunder interim head coach Jason Payne added: ‘’I’m really happy we have managed to extend Liam’s contract and the fact that we have signed him on a two year deal speaks volumes of the club and our ambitions.

‘’Liam has been one of the stand out performers so far this season, he plays with plenty of aggression and is as tough as they come. Every team needs a player like Liam who does the ugly stuff in the middle week in week out, he has added steeliness to our pack that can’t be overstated.

‘’Aside from his rugby ability, Liam is a great person and highly respected by his team mates. His best years are ahead of him and I’m positive he has so much more to come. He is exactly the type of person we are trying to build a team around that can really push on over the next few years.”
