Newcastle Thunder winger Ali Blair is looking forward to another Magic Friday encounter against York City Knights (KO 8 pm) and hoping to continue to enjoy his good run of form that has seen him stand out so far in 2017.

The club’s leading try scorer in Kingstone Press League 1 this season, with six to date has fond memories of his previous involvement in Thunder’s biggest night of the year, have featured in the memorable 32-14 win over the Knights back in 2015.

Making one of his first appearances for the club in front of over 2,500 spectators made quite the impression on Blair and leaves him hoping for more of the same this Friday.

He said: “We came out of the blocks firing and got a really good win against them, especially in front of a bumper crowd, I think it was in front of over 2,000 people and it was fantastic, it’s the best atmosphere that I’ve ever played in.

“It was the first time my Dad had come down and seen me play and he brought quite a few mates down so it was good to get that win on the board.

“It was a great experience and especially to get such a good win. In the first half especially it was just fantastic – we attacked well and we defended well and it was great to be involved and to be able to put on a good game for the crowd.”

“Playing in front of that brings in a bit more nerves than a normal game but as I said, it’s fantastic and if we can get anything approaching that again this weekend it will be amazing.”

Embarking on his third season with the club, local lad Blair has made significant progress with his game, having started nine games from a possible 11, though he insists there is still a way to go before he is the finished article.

“I’m still learning the game and I still have a long way to go, particularly in the more technical aspects and when you consider a lot of the lads in the changing room have been playing League since they were 10 or 11 years old, I’ve still got some catching up there to do.”

Coming into Magic Friday off the back of a strong performance against the vaunted Toronto Wolfpack, Blair says that performance can stand Thunder in good stead for the remainder of the campaign.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks but I think we are confident in ourselves as a group of players and as individuals that we have got the skills and abilities. We just need to start bringing it together as a team and performing on the pitch.

“Once we do that, we’ll show teams and get to where we want to be. We’re still a developing club, I think the whole North East, in general, has great potential and the better we perform on the pitch it’s going to help of the pitch.

“You can see how the crowds have increased over the last couple of years and a lot more youngsters coming through as well. It's a good time to be involved with Thunder. I’ve loved being at the club though and it’s great to be representing my hometown and club in professional sport and to be playing week in week out.”
