Mantelli calls for improved mind-sets

Mick Mantelli says Newcastle Thunder need to get into a positive mind-set as they seek to get back to winning ways in Kingstone Press League 1 after falling to a 34-20 loss away to Whitehaven.

Thunder fought hard to get into a position from which they were aiming to kick on and win, having levelled the scores at 20-20 with a quarter of the game remaining, but were instead undone by mistakes that allowed the host to secure the points.

Reflecting on the game, Mantelli said: “We made too many mistakes early on which let Whitehaven jump to a good lead. I thought we fought really hard to get ourselves back into the game and we had real momentum in the 10 minutes where we levelled out to 20 all.

“Again our problem is we don’t have the experience level to close out games. We had a perfect opportunity in there and a couple of missed tackles put us under the pump again and we struggled to come back from there.

“We put ourselves into enough positons to win the game but it’s tough coming to a ground like this, against a decent team who fight hard.”

Looking on what needs to improve for his team to get back onto the victory trail, Mantelli added:

“We have to change our mind-set and get into a positive frame, it only takes a minute to score a try and again once you get momentum, it’s very hard for teams to stop and I thought we had that, but then a couple of mistakes took that away.”
