Over 100 children from eight different schools played rugby at Kingston Park Stadium at the end of the current school term, as Newcastle Thunder Community Project hosted their latest year 7 girls Sky Try Festival.

The festival concluded the 5-week rugby league coaching allocated within school curriculum and delivered by the Community Project’s coaches.

The aim of the Sky Try programme is to engage both boys and girls in years 3 and 4 at Primary school along with year 7 from secondary schools.

Played in early spring sunshine, the festival was a success thanks to the involvement of Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy, John Spence, Morpeth Newminster, Walbottle Campus, George Stephenson, Ferryhill Business and Enterprise School and Redhouse Academy.

Sky Try coach Rob Jones said: “The festival was a fantastic finish to the five weeks of coaching, with great skill on show from all the girls taken part.

“We hope the schools have found the engagement beneficial and all from Sky Try, hope that the girls have had an excellent experience and consider taking part in the one of the local rugby league clubs available within their area.”
