Mick Mantelli says his side’s second half defensive effort was impressive, as Newcastle Thunder took their third win of the season away to South Wales Ironmen on Sunday afternoon.

Thunder managed to keep their opposition scoreless as they turned an eight-point halftime deficit into a six point lead

“We started well and got the early score but then we started to take it too easy and South Wales definitely seemed to be playing with far more enthusiasm during the first half.

“They are an improved side from last season.  They are stubborn and with some good players will stick in a fight and not give up, but when we tightened up defensively in the second half, we were able to deal with what they had for us.

“It was a shame our defence was so ordinary in the first half because when we turned it on, we looked really solid for that second half.”

Looking to address the matter of slow burning starts that have seen his team need to fight back to take wins in recent weeks, Mantelli says this Sunday’s League 1 cup quarter final will afford him the chance to use his squad and refresh some of his players, ahead of two vitally important league games against North Wales and Barrow.

“I think there’s a little bit of fatigue showing in some of the lads and this week will give us a chance to deal with some of that.

“There have been a few lads like Sam Luckley, Lewis Young and Liam McAvoy who we haven’t had for the last couple of weeks and who are back available and some others who we might want to have a look at.

“That gives us some options and a chance to get things a bit more like we want going back into the league games.”
