Newcastle Thunder off to winning star

Newcastle Thunder hung on to earn a 30-22 Kingstone Press League 1 victory over Oxford RLFC at Iffley Road.

After Josh Nathaniel crossed for the hosts in the fifth minute, the Thunder bounced back with two tries in four minutes as Sam Luckley and Craig Cook powered over.

Benn Hardcastle converted both tries to give the visitors a 12-4 lead but Oxford responded through Aaron Dobek's converted try to trim the deficit back to two points at half-time.

Oxford then took the lead when an interception led to Kieran Gill running the full length of the field to score, with Nathan Kitson's conversion putting the hosts 16-12 ahead.

However, Newcastle battled back again and two tries in quick succession from Dan Parker and Lee Paterson edged them ahead before Cook went over for his second try of the game late on, with Hardcastle making it five conversions from five.

Oxford managed to get back to within eight points right at the death when Kitson scored a try that he also added the extras for, but Newcastle had done enough for the win.
