Ford inspires Oldham

Jon Ford scored a pair of tries as Oldham maintained their four-point advantage at the top of Kingstone Press League 1 with a 28-16 victory at Newcastle Thunder.

Benn Hardcastle opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as he converted his own try but Oldham hit back through Ford's first score.

Macauley Hallett then went over for Thunder to extend the lead to 10-4 at the interval.

Oldham turned it round after the break as David Hewitt and Elliott Liku went in and Lewis Palfrey converted both to give them a 16-10 advantage.

Both sides were then reduced to 12 men following as brawl as Newcastle's Hallett and Oldham's Sam Gee were shown red cards.

Palfrey kicked another goal before Jason Tali went over for Newcastle's third try and Hardcastle added the extras.

But Oldham wrapped it up right at the death with a try from Tom Ashton and another Palfrey goal.
