Full Time Report

Lions winning run continues

Swinton Lions extended their winning run in Kingstone Press League 1 to five games thanks to a 30-18 victory over Newcastle at Kingston Park.

Swinton appeared to be cruising to victory when a brace of Shaun Robinson tries, a Chris Atkin score and three goals from Ian Mort put them into a 16-6 half-time lead, with Fran Welsh's converted try all Newcastle had to show for their first-half efforts.

Newcastle improved after the break but the Lions, seeking a hat-trick of league and cup successes over the Thunder this season, added gloss to a comprehensive victory when Atkin scored a second and Andy Ackers also crossed the whitewash.

Newcastle replied with tries from Ali Blair, Macauley Hallett, Louis Sheriff but they could not avoid a third straight defeat.

Victory saw Swinton move above Barrow into fifth and level on 23 points with fourth-placed North Wales Crusaders, while Newcastle remain eighth after they were condemned to a third successive defeat.
