Hornets edge past Thunder

Rochdale went up to the third in the Kingstone Press League 1 table as they edged a thrilling encounter against Newcastle with a 32-28 victory.

The Thunder would have gone level with two minutes to go, but the extras were not added to Matty Marsh's try, and Paul Crook booted over a penalty as the hooter went to seal the four-point victory for the Hornets.

The visitors led 18-12 at the break thanks to tries from Wayne English, Danny Bridge and Matty Fozard, Crook, who would pass 500 career goals during the contest, and Danny Yates perfect with the boot on each occasion.

However, after Ryan Smith's try had taken the score to 24-12, Newcastle rallied, Ali Blair and Matty Beharrell going over to add to first-half scores from Tom Capper and Joe Brown - all of which were converted by Beharrell.

Lee Patterson restored Rochdale's lead with a fifth try, though, and they held on for victory courtesy of some late drama.
