Newcastle Thunder’s North Eastern core has been enhanced further for 2018 with back row forward Sam Luckley agreeing a new one-year deal with the club.

The 21-year-old from North Shields built on a breakthrough 2016 last season, as he made 18 appearances for the club across the season and further established himself as a key member of the Thunder squad

Impressing with strong work in both attack and defence in League 1, he was also a key figure in Northumbria University’s BUCS triumph and was one of seven Thunder players who were also part of that team.

Choosing to pursue rugby league as his sport of choice following a childhood where rugby union, football and cage fighting commanded his attention, Luckley started out at Wallsend Eagles and was selected for the North East Academy.

He earned international honours with England U19s and spent a year on trial with Super League side Huddersfield Giants, before returning to his native North East to study at Northumbria University.

Having established himself in the Thunder squad during over the last two seasons and been part of the club’s solid end to the 2017 campaign, Luckley is keen to get started for the upcoming season.

He said: “I’m very excited to have signed another year with Thunder. The club has so much potential and after last season’s strong finish, I feel we’ll only develop further in 2018.

“I’m pretty young in the game so I’m looking to play as much as possible and learn from the experienced players and coaches at the club.

“I’m really pleased with how I developed last year. Everyone in the squad worked really hard throughout and it is always great to see that pay off.

Thunder head coach Jason Payne said: “Sam has developed at an incredible rate over the last few years and this is mostly down to how hard he works and his ethic is something that any young player needs to have a great career in the sport.

“He established himself as a regular last season and I believe that Sam has the potential to play at a very high level and I’m delighted he will be with us for another year.

“On top of that he is also a local lad and it’s great to see that the North East is now regularly producing players that can be in the Thunder first team.”
