Newcastle Thunder brought the curtain down on the 2017 season in style on Friday evening, as the club hosted its annual awards evening at Kingston Park Stadium.

Bringing together both the first team and senior academy the evening recognised the achievements of the teams over the course of the year as well as acknowledging the club’s stand out performers.

In front of a crowd of 150 made up of players, coaches, sponsors staff and fans, Lewis Young was named 2017’s Best Back, Evan Simons the best forward and Aldous brothers Harry and Jack collecting young player of the year and Caches player of the year respectively.

Thanks to a host of impressive performances throughout the year, the award for player’s player of the season was a tie between McAvoy and Young, with the pair unable to be separated following the votes cast by their team-mates.

In the academy, Rory Nettleton was named the most improved academy player of the year, Mark McCallan coaches’ player of the year while David Weetman, who has earned a professional contract with the first team for 2018, was named players’ player of the year.   

Off the field Brianna Haunch, a volunteer member of the club’s medical team was awarded the Neil Coombs award for her dedication to the club during the year.

Newcastle Thunder’s focus now switches towards 2018, with squad announcements and details of 2018 season ticket membership packages to be revealed in the coming weeks.
