Newcastle Thunder scooped a pair of prizes at the 2017 Kingstone Press Championship & League 1  awards dinner on Monday, as the great and the good of rugby league gathered at Manchester's Midland Hotel to celebrate the season.

Fullback Lewis Young was recognised for his scintillating form in the competition as he picked up the Young Player of the Year award, while the club's community project was named Foundation of the Year from across the two leagues.

Recognised as Thunder's Young Player of the Year in 2016, the 22 year old has shone throughout the year with a number of stand out performances.Switching to the fullback position following Tom Reudiger's enforced return to Australia,Young has frequently proven to be a potent attacking threat with his mazy runs causing plenty of problems for attacking defences.

That was most recently demonstrated on Sunday, when the Castleford lad helped himself to two tries as Thunder booked their place in the play-off semi finals with a 24 - 26 win over York.

He is also a presence in defence with his rapid pace often seeing him close down attackers who have seemingly broken through for a certain try.

Speaking after receiving his reward, Young said: "I'm really happy to pick up the award. I won the club's own version last season, so to pick up the league's this year is nice.

"I've been enjoying myself this year and I've got to thank the forwards. We have a brilliant pack that has some of the best players I've ever played with in it and their work is what lets me do what I do.

"This team is a great bunch of lads and we've now got hopefully two massive games to really achieve something this year."
