Simons says yes to new Thunder contract

20th August 2017

Newcastle Thunder’s recruitment for the 2018 season continues with Evan Simons becoming the third retention for the new campaign.

The 25-year-old hooker has agreed on a new two-year deal with the club and will enter his fourth season with the Kingston Park-based side in 2018, having established himself as a key player within the side.

Having made over 100 career appearances, 63 of these have come in the colours of Thunder, with the former Widnes Viking junior proving to be a potent attacking threat, with his snipes from dummy half regularly yielding tries.

And after putting pen to paper on his contract extension, Simons says his main target is to progress up the rugby league pyramid along with his club.

He said: “Jason came to me shortly after he took over and explained that I was a key part of the clubs plans for the future. I highly respect him as a coach and I think he has the potential to take the club to the next level and he said he wanted me to be one of the catalysts to do that and that was a big thing to me.

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve probably been a club who has had one of the higher numbers of players through, but keeping a core group of players, which I think we’re starting to put together, we’ve got every chance of success.

“I want to play at the next level and I think Newcastle as a club can do that.  It would be great for it and I think that the players deserve it. That is easier said than done but I’d like to be settled at Newcastle and doing that.”
